Equilibrium, Homeostasis, Symmetry, all these different words are used to describe the same concept, the idea that we need balance our life in some fashion, the outside field, that which is outside of our control pushes and pulls on our psyche, we need to counter in some way by balancing out the push and pull, The idea of justice is balance, it is shown by the scales, we can have some fun, but we need some seriousness, we can have some dark, but we need some light, and Miyagi said it best, "Balance is Key".
What does it mean when we talk about progress within the human species? What is that progression? What does it look like? Ask yourself this question now, write down what your definition of progress is, to us progression seems to be the path to regression, it seems that the more we build up the world or come out with better products and more efficient ways of doing things that we are falling into a very disillusioned state of being, we are regressing into what Robert Louis Stevenson would have called “The Hyde Character” or the shadow opposite of what the “Jekyll “character was, one was good and pure in its form and action the other was the shadow aspect, and when we talk of the shadow we are defining the repository of all the aggregate darkness in the souls of humans. To imagine how far we have come try this mental exercise, imagine the world in its very primitive state, imagine what it must have looked like in the time period before we had electricity, before the industrial age, at a time when we all wore loincloths, while you think of this exercise walk or drive around your town or city and look at all the modernity while thinking of the antique or pre-historic, that is quite a gap, not in time but in technology, in progress, we have come a long way since then, we are smart, we are strong, we are advanced………but are we really, sure we carry computers around in our pockets and we can cure some illnesses and diseases and all that is great and needed……but are we more advanced, have we progressed to a better state. We still have war, and war for money, resources, land and oil. We still worship great idols in the sky, we think we are the center of the universe, we think god talks to just us, we dream up this notion of a beautiful afterlife, we constantly lie to ourselves……are we any more progressed? That is an easy question to answer, we have grown in technology, we have advanced and still are advancing in that way at lightning speed, however our morality is on the decline. We poison the environment, we poison our food, divorce rates are still very high, prisons are filling up, some prisons are even now private, politicians are bought, war is on the rise, racism is rampant, yeah if that’s progression, I don’t want it.
Look how far we have come from the days of simple nomadic hunter-gathers on the plains of some distant continent, a place most of us have no connection with, like some lost link that we are forever seeking to re-discover. This loss is similar to the longing for a deceased or absent parent; the child yearning for that deep biological connection is quite similar to present day humans craving that reconnection with that lost continent, the home that we left, the primal land, the beginning or what you would call the Alpha Point.
How different we must have been in these days long ago when we traveled with the seasons and the cycles of nature. We paid attention to the ground under our feet, the seasons and how they felt; the signs from nature were heeded and nature was our single most important teacher. She taught us through natural consequence, she presented evidence, think about the label that we have given nature, we personify her as “Mother Nature”, she was our mother, we were birthed from her, and Gaia is the name of our universal mother. Gaia was the one who birthed all, she is the plurality, she is the pleroma, she contains all of the opposites, she does not judge, she goes about her course without restraint and she gave us life, this blue marble that we sit on right at this moment is part of the mother or Gaia.
Nature provided for us, it gave us what we needed, there was a direct sense of a relationship; what we needed came from the earth itself, picked by us, by our own hands. We were involved in an intimate feedback loop with Nature itself and this connection was just as deep as is a connection between and child and its parents. Now that connection is tarnished, lost or decaying, we resort to factory farming, bio-engineering and shopping at brightly lit and festive supermarkets where everyone is angry, depressed or empty.
Humans now resemble lost puppies running around a large open space, we are astray, we are aimless, looking for our masters, we are puzzled, wandering, wondering where they have gone. In the process of “progressing and developing” it seems we have lost something, something vital and numinous that was tied into our being or our psyche in the early stages of our existence. I wonder what it must have been like to witness the great Zodiacal Light of Milky Way galaxy every night, (weather-permitting of course), how that must have looked, that power coming from the sky at night, a guide, a teacher, now most of our children see only a few stars in the skies at night, that beauty has been destroyed. Now we look up and see only a reflection of what most of us feel, a black, inky void, absent of majesty and power. This destruction of our connection with life around us is evolving at a frightening pace; the disconnection is becoming ever more powerful even as you read this sentence.
When we look at ourselves at this present moment in time, what do we see about ourselves as a group, as a collective group, what negative behaviors do we possess as a species, how is the family changing over time, how has the fabric of society or the world changed, look at the composition of cities and towns, clumps of people scattered around nodes of “progress” and in-between are the rural areas which are likely to be less populated. Much has changed since we were early people navigating through life, actually everything has changed, except us; we still have the same faculties that we had 50,000 years ago, roughly about the same brain and the same body. Our brain is stuck in the year 48,000 BC but it is 2015 AD, do you now see part of the dilemma? An old soul in a new world, a stranger in a strange land, trying to navigate and mitigate the woes we have created with all of our progress.
I am feeling deep down in my core the need to slow down, take a rest, reduce and condense, I am not starting anew, just a simple death, a symbolic death, something that needed to be shed, every so often we should listen to our bodies and our minds, it sends good advice most of the time. Some of you I will not see again, if I do not see you again I wish you all the best, luck included, for those that will remain with me and continue the journey I will still be around, choose to follow and I will remain. Always remember, steal that FIRE back!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We should never be afraid of change, of moving to something else, some other phase of life, activity, location or even job, for change is growth, staying in the shadow of someone else or something else steals the light of day. We should embrace change and movement, all things change, nothing stays that same, but beware to embrace change is to always rattle someones cage and they may not like that too much, but be steadfast and move ahead, forge on and become what you are meant to become.
There once was a box, it was called Pandora's Box, inside this box were all the evils of the world, but also at the bottom of the box was (Elpis) or Hope, the personification of all things good, so you see, the box contained both dark and light qualities. One more thing, the box is really only symbolic of the human psyche or mind, that which holds memories, behaviors, addictions, pains, depressions, suffering but also happiness, joy, peace and serenity. One day, (you guessed it) it was opened and all the evils of the world poured out into the realm of humans, the evils were free, not trapped anymore in this box/psyche/mind object, however the box was not truly empty inside remained Elpis or the personification of hope.
Shouldn't we let loose our demons as well, but keep hope.
"Get up, come on, get down with the sickness "
Prometheus stole the fire from the gods, the motivation of that theft was to provide mankind with fire, something the gods said humans should never have, Fire. So instead of living on Olympus, Prometheus went out amongst men. to live with them and help them and he quickly noticed that they were no longer happy as they had been during the golden days. He found them living in caves and in holes of the earth, shivering with the cold because there was no fire, dying of starvation, hunted by wild beasts and by one another—the most miserable of all living creatures.
Prometheus thought, "If only humans had fire, they could all live better, happier lives."
Prometheus begged Zeus to give mankind some of the gods fire, Zeus in all his anger, said "Never will I give them fire, not even one spark, for if I did, they would not need us"
Leaving Mt. Olympus, Prometheus, on the long walk to Earth, found a stalk of Fennel, it would burn long and it would burn hot. "Mankind shall have fire said Prometheus as he carried the stalk of fire down to the men, women and children of the Earth.
So mankind then had fire, it warmed them, cooked their food, allowed them to gather around that warmth at night as people.
Fire brought people out of the dark ages, it allowed us to evolve and to grow. Prometheus payed for this theft, chained to a rock, he would have to endure a bird consuming his liver every day, forever.
As a therapist today, helping people deal with many issues and problems, I see people who have lost the fire, that gift that was given to us, the thief having payed dearly with his life everyday, we sit empty with no "Fire in our Belly", the magic of life is lost, the joy no longer joyful, the wonder cease to amaze and we resemble a burnt out husk with no innards to speak of.
I say to all those that I work with, steal that fire back, like a thief in the night, climb that mountain steal that precious fire, and put it back in your belly, where it belongs.
or you can just remain the same
Get Down With The Sickness
The next time you find yourself at work, relaxing in the hammock, sitting with friends, walking down the street, or driving in your metal coffin, think and imagine that you are a very small particle of existence floating around a mutli-billion light-year expanse of nothingness, as though we are a small piece of sand floating around the ocean. As I sit here and type this I am aware of how small I am when compared with the immensity of the universe, I can imagine pulling back slowly from my town, state, continent and planet, rising into a grand picture of the universe until all that remains is a small dot among many more trillions of dots.
"Pretty insignificant we humans are, but so important we imagine."
All life is an illusion, a menagerie of perceptions, of viewpoints, of games and tricks of the mind. How can we be depressed when we understand so little of what the true aspect of life is, we only see it through a a projected veil of ourselves and that which supports and builds that veil around us, we are not seeing the truth or the reality, all we see is our own pre-fabricated prison. For when when we understand that all life is an illusion, then so is depression and so is everything else.
