A Good Book For The Month Of November
Confronting and solving problems is a painful process, which most of us attempt to avoid. And the very avoidance results in greater pain and an inability to grow both mentally and spiritually. Drawing heavily upon his own professional experience, Dr M Scott Peck, a practicing psychiatrist, suggests ways in which confronting and resolving our problems - and suffering through the changes - can enable us to reach a higher level of self-understanding. Dr Peck discusses the nature of loving relationships: how to recognize true compatibility; how to distinguish dependency from love; how to become one's own person; how to be a more sensitive partner.

December's Excellent Book Of Insight And Change
This ambitious book seeks to cover the history of the art of alchemy and its current use, both as a study in itself and as a counterpart/forerunner to today's science of psychology. Psychologist Cavalli here makes a legitimate case for the importance of "the Royal Art" in personal transformation, spiritual healing, and raising global consciousness. General guidelines and an outline of the steps necessary for courting inner growth through alchemy are offered, but the book lacks enough practical exercises to help the reader truly begin. Still, medieval illustrations, rich symbolism, and a discussion of how planetary influences and elements such as air and fire align with mystical experience and scientific experiment make this a refreshing choice. Cavalli cogently argues that the profound wisdom that all humans possess is already alchemy at work, but we must take action in harmony with our true nature to see conscious results. Newcomers and psychology students alike will be drawn to the author's invitation to live more fully in the magical world.

A Book Specific To Men And Their Own Male Struggles

Starting with a new preface that describes the dual nightmares of global terror and global warming, The Water of Life addresses meaning and purpose in personal life and the need to return culture to its mythic context. Meade is a masterful storyteller with a genius for metaphorical thinking; he draws on the power of myths, fairy tales, and his own personal story of descent and transformation during the Vietnam War. At once a mythic journey, a study in depth psychology, and a treatise on initiation The Water of Life addresses the roots of conflict, the recurring hunger for war and the issues of reducing the warrior. Throughout the text, the water of life functions as the core symbol for both personal and cultural renewal, and redemption in the spiritual wasteland. Using ideas gleaned from many years working with youth and communities at-risk Meade's writing rings with the echoes of truth and sings with an incantational voice that takes you right to the edge of elemental knowledge.

A Thorough And Interesting Case Study

First published in 1976, John Mack's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography humanely and objectively explores the relationship between T.E. Lawrence's inner life and his historically significant actions. Extensive research provides the basis for Mack's sensitive investigation of the psychological dimensions of Lawrence's personality and with the history, sociology, and politics of his time.
Because Anxiety "Sucks"

Acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT (pronounced as a word rather than letters), is an emerging psycho-therapeutic technique first developed into a complete system in the book Acceptance and Commitment Therapy by Steven Hayes, Kirk Strosahl, and Kelly Wilson. ACT marks what some call a third wave in behavior therapy. To understand what this means, it helps to know that the first wave refers to traditional behavior therapy, which works to replace harmful behaviors with constructive ones through a learning principle called conditioning. Cognitive therapy, the second wave of behavior therapy, seeks to change problem behaviors by changing the thoughts that cause and perpetuate them. In the third wave, behavior therapists have begun to explore traditionally nonclinical treatment techniques like acceptance, mindfulness, cognitive defusion, dialectics, values, spirituality, and relationship development. These therapies reexamine the causes and diagnoses of psychological problems, the treatment goals of psychotherapy, and even the definition of mental illness itself. ACT earns its place in the third wave by reevaluating the traditional assumptions and goals of psychotherapy. The theoretical literature on which ACT is based questions our basic understanding of mental illness. It argues that the static condition of even mentally healthy individuals is one of suffering and struggle.

When Your Tank Runs Dry...........

Humans Are Good At Surviving..........So Far

Each year more than 17 million Americans suffer from a depressive illness, yet few suffer in solitude. How You Can Survive When They're Depressed explores depression from the perspective of those who are closest to the sufferers of this prevalent disorder--spouses, parents, children, and lovers--and gives the successful coping strategies of many people who live with a clinical depressive or manic-depressive and often suffer in silence, believing their own problems have no claim to attention.
Depression fallout is the emotional toll on the depressive's family and close friends who are unaware of their own stressful reactions and needs. Sheffield outlines the five stages of depression fallout: confusion, self-doubt, demoralization, anger, and finally, the desire to escape. Many people will find relief in the knowledge that their self-blame, guilt, sadness, and resentment are a natural result of living with a depressed person.
Sheffield brings together many real-life examples from the pioneering support group she attends at Beth Israel Medical Center of how people with depression fallout have learned to cope. From setting boundaries to maintaining an outside social life, she gives practical tactics for handling the challenges and emotional stresses on a day-to-day basis.
